Perennial Tidbits

Choose a variety of perennials for extended bloom time.

Consider foliage interest when choosing perennials because of short blooming periods.

Be sure of plant requirements and group plants with similar requirements together.

Deadheading can sometimes prolong bloom time.

Bridge the gaps in flowering times of perennials by adding a few annuals.

Don’t plant during the heat of the day.

Provide a little shade for the first few days after planting if during hot weather.

Mulch the bed to conserve moisture and reduce weeds.

Good soil is the backbone of a good garden.

Stake tall flowers before wind and rain has flattened them.

Some perennials need regular dividing to retain their vigor.

Try growing perennial ground cover under trees instead of grass.

Visit the nursery at different time during the growing season to see the plants blooming at that time.

Be sure and purchase plants that grow in your hardiness zone. Some of the big box stores lump plants together even if they won't survive the winter in your region.
