How To Make an Easy Flower Bed

Thinking about putting in a new flower or shrub bed this year but not looking forward to the digging? You may like my low work way of doing things.

We have a lot of island beds in our yard and most were developed without much digging.

They are mostly shrub and perennial beds with the shrubs going in first.

We dug a hole for the shrubs and after getting them settled in we gathered newspapers we had been saving and put down thick layers right over the grass. Mow the grass down short to make it easier. Over the papers we put down a few inches of bark. About 3-4" is good.

Eventually all sod will decompose and you will be able to plant flowers or bulbs throughout the bed. It usually is best to wait until the next year. But you may be able to dig a few holes in 2 or 3 months.

What you can do in the meantime is buy bags of good topsoil. Lay them on your bed and cut them open. Plant your flowers right in the bag. You can also plant flowers in pots and place them around the bed. Hide the bags and pots with a layer of mulch and it looks like they are growing right in the bed.

Decorative containers can be placed right on top of the mulch for a container garden.

There you have it. An almost instant garden with very little digging.
Now you just need some plants.

During the months of April, May and June, I sell some of my perennials on Ebay. You can also find a good selection of plants by mail at these fine locations.
