Hemorocallis - DaylilyOne of my favorite perennials for their ease of care and their multitude of colors.Choosing varieties with different bloom times can extend the show from spring until fall. There are some varieties that can rebloom but unless you are warmer than zone 5 and have a long growing season chances of it happening for you are slim. Once in awhile we have a long season that gives them time for a second bloom but it is never as prolific as the first bloom. Daylilies are very durable, can survive a wide range of climates, and once they are established require very little care. Remove the flower stalks when flowering is done to keep your daylilies looking neat and tidy. I usually wait until spring to clean up the leaves from the year before. This gives the plant some protection through our cold winters and makes it easy to clean up. Just pick up the brown leaves and put them in the compost pile. No need for garden shears. The
only problem I have with daylilies is they are a favorite food of deer.
We have quite a few deer around and first thing in the spring they come
through for a fresh salad of daylily leaves. After that first munching
they leave the plants alone until the flowers start to develop. Then,
at just the right time, they dine on the daylilies flower buds. Usually
picking them just before they break open.
