Guano - Bat and Seabird - The original manure

Guano - "the droppings of seabirds"
Since bats are not seabirds, I wonder how the word guano came to be associated with bat manure.

That fact doesn't really matter. All we need to know is that it is a 100% natural organic soil amendment.

Before chemical fertilizers came into use, guano was a very important part of agriculture.
The U.S. government offered free land to those who found sources of guano and made it available to U.S. citizens. Congress even passed a law stating that guano from U.S. sources was only to be used in the U.S.

Now growers are once again turning to guano. Organic gardening is gaining popularity and many chemical users are switching to natural organic products. Since guano contains bioremediation microbes that can clean up toxic substances, these growers can use it to clean up the toxins left from chemical use.

These microbes can replace the beneficial microbes that were killed by the use of chemicals.

Guano can come in different formulations.

Higher nitrogen for fast vegetative growth or high phosphorus for fruiting and budding.

This is because of the different types of bats. Insect eaters tend to produce high nitrogen guano and fruit eaters produce high phosphorus guano.

Guano also includes trace elements and highly beneficial microorganisms. It is a natural fungicide and can be used as a spray to combat fungus diseases.
Guano can be used on all plants without danger of burning and provides both fast and slow release of nutrients It can be used dry or mixed with water for a liquid fertilizer or foliar spray. Hydroponics growers are discovering its dramatic influence in their growing practices.

Use guano for these purposes: fertilizer, soil builder, soil cleanser, fungicide, nematoicide, compost activator, lawn treatment, dust seeds for increased germination rate.
